"I want to see something," Dr. Neteya said.

"I told you," I said. "I already checked, and there's no visible sign of any response, or--"

She sighed. "I meant, I want to try something with you," she said.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

She pushed her glasses up on her forehead, and surveyed me. "Try to create a ball of energy."

"What," I said, frustrated, "like magic? I don't even have any northern blood--"

Dr. Neteya cut me off, her voice harsh. "Did I ask for your family history? Just do what I tell you."

My mentor's impatience added to the hells I'd been through in the past two days pushed me past the breaking point. I shouted, "Oh, what, I'm supposed to just wave my hands like this--" I demonstrated, and the momentum of my speech carried me forward in anger. "And all of a sudden some ball of whatever will pop out of-- out of..." My voice faltered, then died completely.

A small sphere of liquid light had formed between my outstretched hands with my gesture, casting a pale lavender glow over everything. I staggered slightly, trying to comprehend what just happened. Some mental grasp slipped, and the energy flickered and died. I leaned heavily against the wall, trembling.

"Interesting," said Dr. Neteya. "Very interesting..."


mori kate, of PvN, accidentally doing magic for the first time at the royal opal institute. this is kindof a big thing, considering magic is something like eye colour or blood type-- it's inherited (hence her comment about northern blood: only those descended from the quartz kingdom can do magic).

poor kate. i'm seriously starting to love her, her backstory is crazy. (even if i keep changing her outfit.. especially the ribbons on her boots.) sigh, there are so many stories to tell...!


but this is proof that i can draw hands without reference!
